Will you have to remove your hard drives from desk tops or lap tops first?

I purchased this product realizing that I may have to remove the hard drives to my desk top, lap top and other devices. USB cables on both ends was not thought about for my set up. Questioning why your company doesn't or did I overlook the different ways of utilizing the product. Also, when I look at video's of evaluations of your products, it looks complicated to say the least with the various type ports used.
